Fashion earrings are made of alloy with gold or silver plating, stones, beads and enamel. With a little care, they stay bright for much longer. Here's how.
The 5 golden rules
- Last on, first off. Put your earrings on after perfume, hairspray and lotion - and take them off before your night routine.
- Keep them dry. Remove before bathing, swimming or workouts. Sweat and water dull the plating.
- Wipe after wearing. A soft, dry cloth removes oil and makeup residue.
- Store them separately. Keep each pair in its pouch or a zip-lock bag so stones don't scratch and chains don't tangle.
- Avoid chemicals. No sanitiser, cleaning sprays or jewellery dips on plated pieces.
If they lose shine
Gently rub with a dry microfibre cloth. Don't use toothpaste or polishing liquid - they can strip the plating.
Sensitive ears?
Wear them for a few hours at a time at first, and keep the posts clean with a cotton swab. If you feel itching or redness, remove them.
